OBJECTIVES:

  • To build the capacity of African governments to effectively utilize parametric insurance instruments to safeguard food security in their respective countries.
  • Increase the uptake of parametric insurance instruments that safeguard food security.

 

Duration:

2023-2025

Target countries:

Benin, Comoros, Djibouti, Ghana, Guinea, Mozambique, Nigeria, Rwanda, Somalia, Uganda, Burundi, Central African Republic, Gabon, Lesotho, Liberia, Libya, São Tomé and Príncipe, Ghana, Chad, and Sierra Leone.

OVERVIEW:

From 2023 to early 2025, ARC Ltd implemented the Africa Disaster Risk Financing Programme, funded by the United States Government. The programme aimed to improve the readiness and technical capacity of African Union Member States to access and use climate and disaster risk financing (CDRFI), including parametric insurance mechanisms offered by ARC Ltd.

KEY OUTCOMES:

  • Strengthened food security across Africa.
  • Increased capacity of African governments to support climate resilience amongst small-holder rain-fed farmers.
  • Provided parametric insurance mechanisms that build the capacity of African governments to better manage climate change-induced risks to food security.
