OBJECTIVES:

To increase resilience and improve livelihoods, food, and water security of smallholder farmers and rural communities across seven Sahelian countries of the Great Green Wall by implementing integrated climate risk management of natural resources (water, soil, ecosystems).

INNOVATIVE FEATURES:

  • Integrated climate risk management combining climate risk preparedness, reduction, and transfer across agroforestry, pastoral, and agricultural sectors.
  • Installation and upgrading of climate and weather monitoring infrastructure (e.g., automatic weather stations, rain gauges, hydrological stations) to improve forecasting and early warning systems.
  • Capacity building for farmers, government officials, and private sector on climate risk information, financial literacy, and climate adaptation technologies.
  • Promotion of climate-smart agriculture, sustainable land and forest management, and renewable energy-powered value chains to reduce vulnerability.
  • Expansion of access to adapted agricultural insurance and sovereign risk transfer to improve financial resilience of farmers and governments.
  • Multi-sectoral and multi-country approach aligned with the Great Green Wall initiative, fostering regional cooperation and knowledge sharing.

KEY OUTCOMES:

  • Direct impact on 40,000 beneficiaries and indirect benefits for 240,000 people in The Gambia alone, with similar regional impact planned.
  • Installation of 40 automatic weather stations and 100 rain gauges across The Gambia, plus rehabilitation of 30 hydrological stations.
  • Training of thousands of smallholder farmers and extension agents on climate adaptation, early warning use, financial literacy, and gender/youth climate nexus.
  • Establishment of 68 farmer field schools and 130 nurseries for climate-adapted crop varieties.
  • Promotion of climate-smart agriculture practices covering tens of thousands of hectares and restoration of degraded lands and pastures.
  • Development of integrated disaster risk financing strategies and enhanced capacity for ARC models and insurance product design.
  • Support for renewable energy mini-grids to power agricultural value chains and improve household energy access.
